Kristin Kemp, Minneapolis, directs her 17-month-old Malamute, Avalanche, to 'sing', which is a bit like a musical bellow, at Freeman Park in Shorewood, Minn., Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. Kemp and Avalanche attended a skijoring class, which starts as 'dryland' style, which means on foot, not on skis.

Attendees are taught how to train their dogs the commands for skijoring, along with teaching the dogs how to 'pull'. Skijoring is a team sport in which the human skis and the dog runs out front pulling along the human by means of a harness and towline. The 'pulling' is what differentiates skijoring from just skiing with your dog.
